The Guides of General Louis de Lamoricière served as the personal escort and mounted orderlies of the Commander-in-Chief of the Papal Army during the 1860 campaign. Selected for their riding skills, discipline, and reliability, they accompanied the General on campaign, carried vital orders across the battlefield, and provided close protection wherever the command staff operated.
Drawn from experienced cavalrymen and distinguished by their smart appearance, the Guides played an important role in maintaining communication between units during the fast-moving operations that culminated in the Battle of Castelfidardo. Though few in number, they were constantly at the heart of the action, ensuring that Lamoricière’s commands reached the troops when they were needed most.
