In 1860, the Dragoons of the Papal Army constituted one of the Papal States’ regular cavalry units, employed primarily as a mobile support and internal security force rather than as heavy battlefield cavalry.
They were “line” cavalrymen—heirs to an older military tradition—organized in a disciplined and relatively formal manner. Papal dragoons were typically armed with a saber and a carbine (or short rifle) and rode sturdy horses suited for patrolling and rapid movement rather than for sustained charges.
