The Austrian Chevaulegers were experienced cavalrymen from the Austrian Empire who volunteered to serve in the Papal Army during the 1860 campaign. Bringing with them years of military training and battlefield experience, they strengthened the Papal cavalry at a time when every skilled soldier was urgently needed to defend the Papal States.
Light cavalry by tradition, the Chevaulegers were employed for reconnaissance, escort duties, courier missions, and rapid battlefield maneuvers. Their professionalism and discipline made them a valuable asset within the multinational force assembled under General Louis de Lamoricière, where volunteers from across Europe stood alongside Papal troops.
