The Horse Gendarmes were the mounted elite of the Papal police and one of the most recognizable cavalry formations serving the Papal States during the 1860 campaign. Combining military discipline with law enforcement duties, they acted as escorts, maintained public order, carried dispatches, and protected senior officers and dignitaries.
During the campaign against the Piedmontese invasion, the Horse Gendarmes accompanied the Papal Army on active service, performing reconnaissance, communication, and command support roles. Their distinctive uniforms and elegant appearance made them one of the most prestigious mounted corps in the Papal forces.
